The Friendly Cup table is refreshed at the beginning of each month.
Seventeen players took on four classic open gambits in the October Friendly Shield event, starting from positions I chose from an old book by George Botterill. Upsets abounded, but George Burdell came through the carnage to win with 4/4.
Our traditional season opening quickplay was well attended, with John Tompson taking the honours despite increased competition!
The final Friendly Shield event was a shared victory for Alan and Justin. Asher had a good tournament and wins the overall Friendly Shield title for 2025/26.
David W produced a perfect 4/4 score to win the club’s latest First Tuesday social tournament, played in the popular Freestyle Chess (Chess960) format. With several players tied close behind and only two events remaining, the race for the season-long Friendly Shield remains extremely tight.
