David W produced a perfect 4/4 score to win the club’s latest First Tuesday social tournament, played in the popular Freestyle Chess (Chess960) format. With several players tied close behind and only two events remaining, the race for the season-long Friendly Shield remains extremely tight.
Derby Chess Club’s latest first-Tuesday social tournament featured Benko Gambit positions curated — and introduced — by Steve, blending instruction with competitive play despite poor weather and traffic disruption. Dave, a recent member, took first place ahead of fellow newcomer Paul, while Siraj and Phil enjoyed their first taste of Derby club chess.
Derby Chess Club’s January Blitz continued the popular First of the Month social series, blowing away the festive cobwebs on a freezing winter evening with fast, competitive chess. Leonid topped the field as expected, while new faces Joe and Srikanth made their first appearances in a lively and well-contested event.
Derby Chess Club held a Queen’s Gambit themed tournament on 2 December 2025, with each round beginning from a different curated opening position. Leonid secured victory with a perfect score, rounding off an evening of rich strategy and competitive play.
Twelve determined players braved the downpour for our November Freestyle tournament, where newcomer Leonid took first place with a flawless score.
