Derby Chess Club is a thriving community club that offers a wide range of social and competitive chess.

Club Nights:
The adult club meets most Tuesday nights between September and May, from 7:30pm.
Very occasionally a club night may be cancelled, due to other Derbyshire chess events or public holidays. It’s always worth checking if it is your first visit to the club.

Seventeen players took on four classic open gambits in the October Friendly Shield event, starting from positions I chose from an old book by George Botterill. Upsets abounded, but George Burdell came through the carnage to win with 4/4.
Derby C began their Division 2 campaign with a narrow 1½–2½ defeat away at Burton & Lichfield C, despite starting as the stronger side on paper. Stuart's well-supported h-pawn win and a hard-fought draw on board one were not enough, with the decisive game lost to a missed knight fork in time trouble.
Last year’s “Chess Forge” team, the E team, now let loose on the league, played this year’s edition - the F team. The result was a 3½–½ win for the E team. The E team demonstrated their growth and the F team gained some valuable experience. The match was enjoyed by all that played!
UPCOMING EVENTS
A four round Chess 960 rapid tournament. This format is now seen regularly in high level chess and has become a firm favourite of club members. Try your hand at this exciting format where opening preparation is negated. All welcome.
Capablanca was famous for his endgame skill - but even he had to pass through the opening! This is a four round rapid tournament based on openings from his games. Will you pilot these openings into the endgame - or will you drive them into complicated middlegames. All welcome.
Our traditional New Year blitz tournament. A chance to blow away the post celebration cobwebs. A four round competition of 2 game mini-matches. All welcome.
