Cobwebs Blown Away in Quickplay
On Tuesday (08/09/25), the first “Friendly Shield” event of the season took place. This was the now traditional season opening quickplay. It is a great opportunity to get our chess brains in gear after the summer break and as usual brilliance and blunders abounded - perhaps not in equal quantity!
With a large turnout we spread out into our mezzanine room!
John Tompson carried on with his dominance in these tournaments with a perfect 4/4. There were excellent results elsewhere with Jake Rowbottom scoring 3 and Asher 2½.

The results in the individual tournaments count towards the Friendly Shield, a season long Grand Prix style event, where points in each event are modified by a handicap. After the first event John, Jake and Asher share the lead - although there is a long way to go!
