Attacking Chess Brings Derby B Rewarding Draw

The Derby B team travelled to Chesterfield on Thursday evening (05/03/26) and returned with a valuable draw from a competitive encounter. The match featured an outstanding attacking win from Skott on board one against a strong opponent, while Justin came very close to adding a second point in a dramatic game on board two.

On board one, Skott adopted a Jobava London setup against a King’s Indian/Modern structure and managed to establish e4 early. He castled long with the intention of launching a kingside attack once his opponent committed his king there. When that moment came, Skott sacrificed two pawns and a rook to tear open the position. Although later engine analysis suggested the position may actually have favoured his opponent, it proved extremely difficult to defend in practice. When his opponent chose to counterattack, Skott seized the opportunity to exploit the exposed kingside and forced resignation on move 24 with checkmate unavoidable.

On board two, Justin’s game began quietly before he chose to sharpen the struggle, accepting doubled pawns in return for his opponent’s light-squared bishop. With relatively few pieces defending the king, Justin launched an ambitious attack and produced an impressive piece sacrifice that left his opponent’s king dangerously exposed. Unfortunately, time trouble — Justin’s self-confessed Achilles’ heel — intervened just as the attack was reaching its peak. With only seconds remaining on his clock, Justin resigned after the queens were exchanged, although he had come very close to delivering the decisive blow earlier in the attack.

On board three, I opened with a queen’s pawn and the game developed steadily into a balanced middlegame. Neither side was able to create serious winning chances, and after a sequence of manoeuvring play my opponent forced a repetition to secure the draw.

On board four, Stuart employed the Modern Defence and the game developed into a typically unbalanced struggle. His opponent controlled the d-file while Stuart was left with doubled e-pawns, but he generated useful counterplay on both flanks. Stuart eventually found a neat tactical idea to win a pawn, although calculating the sequence cost valuable time. His opponent defended resourcefully and the game reached an endgame of two knights against bishop and knight. With the clock ticking down, Stuart sensibly accepted a draw while still a pawn ahead, ensuring that Derby secured a deserved share of the match.

Overall, it was a strong team effort away from home, highlighted by Skott’s attacking victory and several fighting performances across the boards.
