Tight Draw for Derby D Against Spondon A

On Tuesday (24/2/26), Derby D were held to a hard-fought 2–2 draw at home to Spondon A on Tuesday evening, with Division 3 tightly bunched going into the match.

On board one, Garry faced Philip Sheldon, who chose the Scotch Gambit. After the opening, Philip seized an early tactical opportunity and, within a few moves, emerged an exchange and a pawn up. From there Garry was unable to recover and the point went to Spondon.

Chris, playing White against Graham Pace, opened with the Colle System in what began as a very symmetrical position. Once the centre opened, Graham struggled to activate his queenside pieces, particularly his light-squared bishop, which was hemmed in by a well-placed knight in the centre. Chris gradually built pressure on the kingside, creating mounting positional problems that eventually led to the loss of the black queen and a decisive checkmate.

Sam’s game was evenly balanced for much of the evening. Entering the endgame, both players had six pawns, with Sam holding the bishop pair against two knights. There was considerable tension around e7 as Sam pushed to promote, and with both players short of time the pressure told — Doug blundered a knight, and Sam secured the win on time.

In my own game against Ross Warner, we reached a symmetrical English structure. I achieved the more active piece placement and, given the match situation, a draw may have been the sensible option. Instead, I tried to generate play with an ambitious kingside attack, but in doing so I ended up trapping my own rook. When it came under attack and could not be saved, I had no option but to resign.

The match finished level at 2–2, reflecting a closely contested evening and keeping Division 3 finely poised.
