Late Win Secures Valuable Point for Derby C
On Thursday (26/02/26), a bottom-of-the-table clash between B&L C and Derby C ended in a share of the spoils, leaving both sides still occupying the relegation places.
On board one, Leonid faced a strong opponent and, after an inaccuracy in a London System, dropped a piece and was unable to recover. I levelled the match when, a pawn down and pressing for counterplay, my opponent overlooked a pinned pawn, allowing a decisive tactical sequence to bring the score back to 1–1.
Sam’s game transitioned into a rook-and-pawn ending, but his opponent’s more active pieces gradually told and Derby fell behind 2–1. The result then rested on Matt, who held a significant advantage but was short of time; keeping his composure, he converted under pressure to secure the full point and an honourable draw for the team.
