Points on the Board: Derby B Squeeze Past Newly Promoted Clay Cross

On Tuesday (13/10/26), Derby B hosted Clay Cross A, who were promoted from the second division last season. The visitors gave us a tough match, but we prevailed 2½–1½, with draws on the top three boards and a win on board four. A narrow success, perhaps, but it earned the team two very valuable points against a close rival and gave us our first points on the league scoreboard.

On board one, Skott reports a very positional game. His opponent chose an English Opening set-up, which Skott met with symmetrical moves. In the middlegame he took over some key squares and seemed to be making progress, but he could not find a breakthrough. Forcing the position left him a little worse, and with both players short of time his draw offer was accepted.

On board two, Kevin reached an opening position he was reasonably happy with, but then played a few moves he felt were rather timid when bolder options might have been advisable, and the position became quite bland. His opponent did not want to complicate and more or less forced an exchange into an opposite-coloured bishop ending with equal pawns. There was little chance of making progress, and a draw was agreed when Kevin offered it.

Justin, on board three, built a promising positional advantage by gaining space on the queenside and establishing a knight on c4, leaving his opponent’s pieces awkwardly placed. He doubled rooks on the e-file but missed a chance to exploit the situation, the pressure faded, and his opponent was able to swap the rooks off on favourable terms. As the minor pieces came off and the board cleared, the backward pawn on c6 became a significant weakness, with Justin’s remaining pieces growing less active. When his opponent offered a draw, Justin was happy to accept.

On board four, I reached a queen’s pawn position I was unfamiliar with and perhaps did not play well, particularly in the placing of my light-squared bishop. I planned to increase my control of the centre by advancing the e-pawn, but my opponent, Kieran Redhead, cut across this with a piece attack against my king, sacrificing an exchange to win the e-pawn and engage the pawn screen around my king. A further piece sacrifice broke through that screen, but Kieran was running very short of time and blundered his queen, resigning quickly thereafter.

So, a slim but deserved win for the B team.
