Everything to Play For: Derby B Keep Their First Division Hopes Alive

On Thursday (9/4/26), Derby B took on Rolls-Royce B with a clear mission: climb out of the relegation zone.

On board one, Skott played an aggressive London System and castled queenside, but overlooked a knight fork that cost him significant material — leaving him no choice but to resign.

Board two told a different story. Justin's opponent set up a Stonewall, but Justin neutralised it early by exchanging off their good bishop. When the rooks came off, he declined a draw — sensing a slight edge and mindful of the match situation. He pressed on the kingside, exploited the better bishop, won a pawn, and converted the endgame cleanly.

On board three, two bishops on an open board gave me a slight advantage in the middlegame. Patient manoeuvring tempted my opponent into advancing pawns in front of his castled king — gaining space, but fatally loosening his king's diagonal cover. A timely attack exploited those weaknesses, winning material and leaving him unable to avoid checkmate.

Stuart had the most dramatic ride on board four. Playing the Old Benoni, he found himself in a cramped position and had to defend resourcefully before piece exchanges brought some relief. Sensing his opponent's time pressure, Stuart launched a kingside counter-attack that forced a decisive mistake. In the ensuing king chase, he delivered checkmate before his opponent could mobilise their remaining pieces.

A thoroughly satisfying evening — and Derby B head into their final home game against Breadsall with everything still to play for in the battle to stay in the First Division.
