Fighting Performance from Derby B in Lichfield
Last week, on 2 April, the B team travelled to Lichfield to face a strong Burton & Lichfield A side. With Justin unfortunately delayed and unable to make the match, we started a player down, making the task even tougher.
On board one, Skott produced an enterprising performance in a London System, launching a kingside attack with g4 and steadily pushing his opponent back while bringing his rooks into play. Although the final breakthrough proved elusive, Skott had much the better of the game and secured a well-earned draw.
On board four, Shah defended resiliently under sustained pressure, setting his opponent the challenge of finding a way through. Despite a determined effort, a misplayed sequence eventually cost material and the game.
On board three, I opted for a solid approach, reasoning that my opponent would need to take risks to play for a win. He created some problems, but I was able to generate counterplay by infiltrating with my queen and rook, leading to a draw being agreed.
Although we ultimately lost the match, this was a spirited performance under difficult circumstances, and we made a strong Burton & Lichfield side work hard for their victory.
