Promoted B-Team Suffer (again!) Against Champions

The B team travelled to Lichfield on Monday (28/4) for the final match of the season against the league leaders Burton and Lichfield A . They had put together a strong team to face us!

George made a strong start with his Bird's opening being met by the From gambit when he quickly became two pawns to the good with a strong centre and an attack on the king's side. A misstep however, when pressing, led to the loss of an exchange and then pawns with his opponent consolidating to win in the end game.

In my game I played a King's Indian against an adversary who opened quite conservatively and my pieces found good squares. However when the time came for boldness in attack on my part, I played for safety. My pieces were not well placed for my adversary's counter attack and his rook and queen cornered my king.

Stuart's King's Indian attack never quite got going and his opponent worked an advantage on the queen's side which won him some pawns. He was able to convert this into a winning end game.

Justin playing for this team for the first time gained a very promising position in the middle game with an advanced passed pawn. His adversary just held on in the rook ending to make the draw.

A disappointing evening when the score could perhaps have been reversed but a taste of the challenges to come next season in the top division!
