Commanding at Home: Derby A Clinch Runners-Up Spot
On Tuesday (21/4/26), Derby A consolidated a league finish as clear runners-up with a 3-1 home win against already-relegated Rolls-Royce B.
Leonid achieved a solid and comfortable win with white on board four against Owen Dale. He calmly exchanged pieces with a slightly better pawn structure and then pounced on mistakes to win a pawn before wrapping up the game with a nice queen-sac tactic.
I was next to finish, winning with black against Eddie Bromilow on board one. I had an edge out of the opening in a Colle System but the position was quite closed. A weakening pawn move allowed my light-squared bishop to come to life but a manoeuvre I was planning would, in retrospect, have surrendered my advantage. It was a hard-to-spot trick, though, and in a position Eddie thought was already lost, he played a weaker move that allowed me to line up queen and bishop towards his king.
On board three, George converted a double rook-and-pawn endgame very impressively against Tomasz Adamski to clinch the match.
That left Kevin, who had been clearly better almost all game against Paul Rutland. His opponent held on doggedly, however, and after misjudging a series of pawn exchanges on the kingside, Kevin settled for a draw in what had become an equal position.
Our final game is at home against Burton & Lichfield, which will bring the Division One campaign to a close. A win would see us finish level on points with Belper - but a superior board count, or 'goal difference', meant the holders had already guaranteed a successful title defence before our final three matches.
