The Derbyshire Chess Jamboree was held at Rolls Royce Sports and Social Club on May 10th. 42 players from across the county played in a fun rapid-play, with teams competing for the coveted Jamboree Cup and Jamboree Plate trophies. The format ensured that anybody attending could play so as well as complete teams we also had a welcome number of individuals (some of which formed ad-hoc teams).
There were 4 rounds of rapid-play with each player having 15 minutes for the whole game. The format was a modified Swiss competition: – Players from the same team could not be paired against each other – “Accelerated Pairings” were used, whereby players with ECF grades of 130 or above were treated, for pairing purposes only, to have an additional 1½ points. This ensured that in the early rounds significant mismatches were avoided, but later in the tournament the better performing under 130’s could encounter the poorer performing over 130’s.
The winners of the Cup competition were Derby A (pictured L-R: Dave Smith, Chris Dunworth, Jaime Castro & Dave Williams) with 11½/16. In 2nd were Chesterfield with 10½ and 3rd were Breadsall with 10.
The winners of the Plate were Rolls Royce B with 10½. In 2nd were Derby B with 8 points. Derby D, Spondon and Derbyshire Knights (a combined Rolls Royce/ Clay Cross team) were 3rd equal with 7½ points.
A special mention is deserved for Kenneth Morrison who was the only player in the competition to achieve a perfect 4 points from 4 games.
Overall a great evening. Any feedback is welcomed from those who participated, and we look forward to seeing further growth in numbers next year.
